[sticky post]Fic Masterlist
The White Tower and the Winding Stair

Molly reads a lot of fairy tales and she knows very well how this story is supposed to go: the princess in the tower is rescued, either by the handsome prince or the plucky young stable boy, and then they fall in love. What definitely isn’t supposed to happen is that the prince and the stable boy fall in love with each other, while the princess is instructed to marry the prince’s legendarily cold-hearted brother. But life rarely goes Molly’s way.

Blowing the dust off my livejournal
Apologies to all and sundry, I've been rather absent recently! Life is all go at the moment, as I'm starting a new job next week, moving to London in two days(!) and also just started a new relationship (met a guy at my creative writing group, he's adorable). So all very good things, but I'm rather off balance by how busy life suddenly is!

But in fandom related news good things are happening too! Sherlock remix is posting and someone wrote a really excellent and chilling remix of Proxy - if you like dark fic I recommend checking it out even if you haven't read the original! It's a great dark character study. But do heed the warnings.

Also I'm leading a discussion over at reading221b right now of Silence by prettyarbitrary - it's a super short fic (400 words) so easy to jump into if anyone fancies. So far me and the wonderful and wise donutgirl have been having a fun discussion but more people would be cool....

Fic rec - Love and Friendship
frozen delight wrote me a fic for fandomaid! It's a delightful short fluffy read, filled with humour and fun character moments so I'm recommending it to you all as a pick me up. Definitely a must for fans of Anthea and John.

Title: Love and Friendship
Author: frozen_delight
Fandom: BBC Sherlock
Characters/Pairing: Anthea, John, ensemble cast, eventual Sherlock/John
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: None
Word count: 4400
Summary: Ten times John met Anthea. Or ten steps John took towards falling in love with Sherlock Holmes. Not S3-compliant.

Holmestice recs!
There were some great fics this year, I thought I'd put together a list of some favourites..

First off, my gift:

Title:The Ghosts of Our Old Loves by fleetwood_mouse

Pairings: John/Sherlock, John/Sholto, John/Mary

Summary: John asks Sherlock not to use his middle name in the toast. For once, Sherlock listens—and so he doesn’t solve the crime or see the signs, and John doesn’t save the life. But the world keeps turning.

I always seem to get lucky with gift exchanges, and this one is really amazing. An alternate universe where Sherlock never solves the crime at John's wedding and Sholto dies. The John/Sholto parts are gorgeous and just how I imagine their relationship panning out. This fic has rather inflamed my developing addiction to this pairing - emotionally constipated military types and their doomed romances are very much my thing apparently (if anyone has recs, I'll love you forever!). The author also does a great job with Mary, and how her story unfolds in this alternate universe - I think it's one of my favourite depictions of her in fic, courageous, smart and very competent. And her take on John and Mary's daughter is wonderful. So, yes, in conclusion, don't let my ramblings put you off, it's a great story.

Other BBC fics:

It's What You Don't Know by blackbird_song

Pairings: John/Sherlock, John/Mary

Summary: Sometimes it takes multiple voices to make us aware of our blindfolds.

A look at S3 with an emphasis on John and Sherlock's relationship and their own blindspots with regards to one another. What made this fic special, in my eyes, was how it was peppered with some wonderful, funny and clever character moments.

You Don't Drown Because You Fall Into A River by solrosan

Pairings: pre Sherlock/John/Mary, John/Mary

Summary: After returning to London, Sherlock starts to have nightmares and trouble sleeping, and there's really only one place where he would go for help.

A really adorable pre-Johnlockary fic. I especially enjoyed the development of Sherlock and Mary's relationship here.

It Is Always by kestrel337

Pairings: Sherlock/John

Summary: Endings. Transitions. New Beginnings.

The game is never over.

A retirement fic! The author gets the voice of grumpy old man!Sherlock just right - still the same Sherlock, but with the added sense that he has realised his own mortality a little (and worse, John's). Also I really enjoyed the cameo from Raz.

A Prince Worth Waiting For by dioscureantwins

Pairings: Sherlock Holmes/Molly Hooper, Molly Hooper/Khan Noonien Singh, Martin Crieff/Molly Hooper

Summary“So you think you can all come barging in here, kill my dragon, ruin my chances of a true prince rescuing me and do a disappearing act?”

A funny and imaginative caper that riffs off a fairy-tale Molly ( or at least, a version of Molly who thinks she is living in a fairy tale) meeting various Benedict Cumberbatch characters, as well as the Sherlock cast as she searches for her true place in the world and a prince worthy of her. Also - it features Sherlock and the Scotland Yard crew as dragon hunters! Ever since Mycroft's statement in S3, I've been waiting for this :P

Man, Made by biswholocked

Pairings: Sherlock/John

Summary: human:
[hyoo-muh n or, often, yoo‐] adjective 1. of, pertaining to, characteristic of, or having the nature of people: human frailty.

In which Sherlock struggles with what it means to be human.

Wonderful fic which blends romance, Holmes family dynamics with some enthralling and satisfyingly creepy sci-fi elements.

Modesty had never been one of Mr Holmes' requirements by dognmonkeyshow

Characters: Anthea, Mycroft

Summary:Andrea Mortimer is surprised to discover that she has applied for a position in the Department of Business, Industry and Skills. Now she needs to figure out what the job actually is.

Interesting character study of Anthea, and what exactly her job for Mycroft entails.

Deerstalker Weekly by meredydd

Pairings: implied Sherlock/John and Lestrade/Molly

Summary: Sherlock and John have had many clients over the years, and have helped many people. Some of them are more organized than others.

Something a little different here - I love this insight into Sherlock's "fandom", especially in how it shows how forming such a group is forming a positive force in people's lives. It's also an interesting insight into what happens after being a Sherlock client.

ACD fics:

A Handsome and Generous People by sanguinity

Pairings: Holmes/Watson

Summary: “Watson,” Holmes said, reaching up to clasp my wrist.

“I’m sorry, old chap,” I said, giving him my hand. “It’s only Wt’sn.”

OK, this isn't strictly only an ACD fic, it's based on a cartoon I've never heard of - but beyond the author's note you don't really need to be familiar with it. It reads very well as a sci fi fic about Holmes thrown into the future and trying to find a way back to his Watson (though striking up a friendship a very pleasant not-Watson along the way).

Setting the Sail sanguinity

Pairings: Frances Carfax/Mary Brackenstall

Summary:‘Lady Frances Carfax’—as she is not called—has already lost years of her life to her ordeal. She has no intention of losing anything more.

Fics about minor characters are hard to do well, but this author breathes life into the independently-minded Frances recovering from a horrific ordeal, and her budding relationship with the heiress she meets at their mutual hotel - I really found myself rooting hard for them both. The fic contains a fascinating look at Holmes and Watson and from a fresh (and not entirely flattering) angle. Even if you aren't familiar with the original story, it's an excellent read.

Conversations at Simpsons-in-the-Strand by garonne

Pairings: Holmes/Watson

Summary:Holmes doesn't expect a happy ending, but perhaps he'll get one anyway. Set in the early days of their acquaintance.

A piece about a series of intimate conversations that Holmes and Watson have in public - this is just very well written, fluid, beautiful, and very in character.

Fic - The White Tower and the Winding Stair
Title: The White Tower and the Winding Stair
Author: CherryBlossomTide
Fandom: Sherlock
Rating: General Audiences
Pairings/Characters: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson, Molly Hooper/Mycroft Holmes, Kate/Irene Adler, Mrs Hudson, Mary Morstan, Janine Hawkins, Charles Augustus Magnussen, Lestrade, Sally Donovan.
Warnings: Kidnapping, Imprisonment, setting-typical homophobia.
Summary: Molly reads a lot of fairy tales and she knows very well how this story is supposed to go: the princess in the tower is rescued, either by the handsome prince or the plucky young stable boy, and then they fall in love. What definitely isn’t supposed to happen is that the prince and the stable boy fall in love with each other, while the princess is instructed to marry the prince’s legendarily cold-hearted brother. But life rarely goes Molly’s way.

7 line WIP meme
I was tagged by frozen_delight - the requirement is to post 7 lines from the 7th page of a WIP and then tag 7 other people to do the same. This is more an old abandoned fic than a WIP but what the hell....

Mrs Hudson stops at the corner of the street to get back her breath. There is a new ache spreading over her shoulders to the base of her neck. After the death of her older brother she developed arthritis in her fingers. The discovery of her husband’s other life had lead to a crippling ache in her hip. It was a rather fitting tribute to Sherlock’s personality that his death manifested itself as a pain in her neck.

“Mrs Hudson?” a soft voice calls out from behind her, and Mrs Hudson turns to see a young woman, standing awkwardly behind her, a nervous smile on her face.

I tag author_by_night, dioscureantwins, indybagginsazriona, donutgirl, radialarch, splix of course, no pressure if you don't feel like doing it!

Fandom aid
Two posts in two days! This is unprecedented...

I've signed up to Fandom Aid, to raise funds for the earthquake in Nepal. I'm offering both fic writing (Sherlock, HP and various other fandoms) and beta/britpick/cheerleading services. If you are interested in any of these you can ask for them here.

Alternately, lots of other interesting writers and artists, including the wonderful frozen_delight are signed up too, in Sherlock and various other fandoms. If you think donating this way is something you'd like to do, or if you'd think you'd like to sign up yourself it's worth checking out!

Pick me up fic recs!
As people who know me probably realise I'm someone who generally prefers angsty or gritty fics but there are days that isn't true.... I collected this list of 'pick me up' fics, fics which I consider purely feel good, the kind of thing I want to read on a bad day- all are short, fluffy, funny and guaranteed to warm the heart. Since Sherlock fandom seems to have had a bit of a rough time these past few days I thought it might be a pertinent time to post them. You will be happier after reading these fics, or your money back*.

They are mostly Sherlock/John, with a little gen featuring Sherlock and John, Sherlock and Mycroft and the Sherlock cast as a whole.

Recs!Collapse )

What do you think? Do you have similar pick me up fics?

WIP meme
Stolen from radialarch and dhampyresa: When you see this, share 3 random lines from 3 WIPs. (This made me realise just how many WIPs I have lurking in my folders. Self: learn to finish things!)

1. “It is just the way my mouth looks,” I said, looking away. “I’m not really laughing.”

2. Alka had always imagined them like twin trees, standing beside one another of the surface but beneath the ground, their roots tangled, drawing strength from the same source.

3. Death had never bothered Mary, but she hated to see anyone in pain. It was what had made her good at her job, once upon a time. It gave her the motivation to make things clean, to always shoot straight. Well, she thought, as they turned silently to look at the rest of the rooms, and John’s hand fell away from hers unconsciously to rest on the shape of his phone in his pocket again. Almost always.

(OK, the last one isn't really just one line, but whatever).

Hope all is going well, flist!

Original vs Fan Fiction, and a slightly cracky blast from the past
I've been taking a creative writing course recently in the evenings. I took the beginner's class, not quite sure if fanfic writing qualifies me as an 'intermediate' writer. I've written fanfic since I was a teenager with only occasional venture into original fic, and it's made me realise its left my skill set as a writer a bit uneven. We had a whole lesson on description and point of view which I felt I was very familiar with already - on the other hand creating a completely original character and structuring a plot from scratch is a place where I feel completely lost. It's so much easier when your audience is aware of the character and plot background already! When writing fanfic I don't have to establish Sherlock is intelligent, or that he solves crimes or that he jumped off a building and it made his friends feel sad and conflicted, because the readers all know that already. With fanfic I feel like a I can just sit and write, while with original fic I have to stop and think every few lines about whether this is really realistic or plausible, whether I've given the reader enough of the background, or too much of the background. It feels a little demoralising to realise just how patchy my skills are. I think a lot of it is also lack of confidence but... hmm. I suppose the only answer is practise?

In unrelated news, I came across this in my old files and found this. When TSOT came out I had an unfortunate incident with my laptop where the audio stopped working. Because I lack any kind of self control I watched half the episode without audio and to fend off the boredom of watching people talk with no idea of what they were saying, made notes on what I imagined was happening. The result is rather silly. But it gave me a laugh when I found it again, and thought it might amuse others. At least, I feel I must claim credit for picking up on the symbolic importance of John's chair :P.
